For the second stage of your trek in the Alps, you won’t be alone! Marmots, deer and chamois will be there to escort you to the summit of Col de la Cayolle, rising to 2,326 metres. If you’re an adrenalin freak, this is a favourite spot for paragliding. Glide like an eagle above the larches and let the beauty of the landscape transport you… Still got energy to spare? Head to Golf du Bois Chenu golf course, sporting a fun layout suitable for all the family. And if the beauty of the site is enough for you, simply gaze around and lap up the views.
With its 600 km of well-maintained footpaths, Mercantour National Park is a definite must during your trek on the GR56 footpath in the Alpes French South. Home to many species of reptiles, birds and mammals, the site overflows with animal and plant life. Make sure you take along a good pair of binoculars so you can hide out and rediscover the delights of wildlife-watching – your patience will very likely be rewarded! Animals have their secrets and mankind has his mysteries too… The Vallée des Merveilles and its 40,500 cave paintings from the Bronze Age is truly a sight to behold.
Located just a stone’s throw from Italy, this 4th stage is an apt reflection of your adventure: simple and authentic. At dawn, head off to Saint-Ours. Perched on a plateau, this village is a coveted rock-climbing spot and departure point for numerous hikes. So what will it be, a figure eight follow-through or double knot? Just take your pick! If you strike up a conversation with the village elders, they’ll be delighted to recount all the local legends. Last but not least, don’t miss a visit to the fort of Roche La Croix. Formerly part of the Ligne Maginot defence line, it also has a fascinating story to tell…
You’ll need to warm up your calf muscles for the last stage of your trek in the Alps – this section really is challenging! Seasoned walkers will simply love this face-to-face with raw, wild, pure landscapes, while novices will definitely appreciate a few stop-offs. At lunchtime, why not opt for some rest and relaxation on the shaded banks of Lac de la Pare, also a great spot for a picnic when the temperatures soar. To escape from the sun’s rays, dive into the historic tunnel of Parpaillon. When you reach the summit, fabulous views over the town of Barcelonnette awaits you.
