Eglise Notre Dame de la Nativité de Lieuche

The rustic baroque church jealously guards one of the purest master pieces of Louis Bréa: the Retable de l'Annonciation (1499). This beautifully balanced depiction of the Annunciation has no accompanying anecdote, and is rich with theological symbols. Thus, the miniscule depiction of the Visitation, visible through the window, attests to the truth of the Angel's words, and the reality of the Incarnation. In the upper register, the Crucifixion is all contemplation and waiting, and on the altar step, amongst his apostles, Christ offers his blessing, holding the world saved by the Cross on his open hand, spreading tenderness.
