    Of the great currents of abstraction that have characterised 20th century art, we shall retain the perpetual changes and the multiple means of expression explored through painting. It is no longer a question of imitating nature, as traditionally approached in painting, but of a conception of reality based on form and colour.

Sometimes bordering on formal minimalism, sometimes flirting with a certain lyricism, the exhibition proposed by the Département du Var puts this still very much alive abstract art into perspective through the sensitivity of thirteen artists, some of whom are references in their field of expression.

The works on display, from the Var Departmental Collection of Contemporary Art, reflect the research undertaken by these artists into colour and compositional balance, demonstrating, if proof were needed, that painting continues to occupy a predominant place in the fields of contemporary art.
