Jonathan started playing the piano at the age of 7. After studying at the Conservatories of Sarreguemines and Strasbourg, he was admitted at the age of 12 to the Musikhochschule of Saarbrücken where he studied under the direction of professors Robert Leonardy and Jean Micault; at the same time, he took lessons with Gisèle Magnan, who continues to accompany his work today. At the age of 16, he entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris where he was successively taught by pianists Bruno Rigutto, Brigitte Engerer, Claire Désert and Michel Dalberto. Since September 2016, he has been perfecting his skills with Louis Lortie and Avo Kouyoumdjian at the Chapelle Musicale Reine Élisabeth in Belgium. Performing on stage since the age of 10, Jonathan has been invited to the most famous festivals and halls around the world.
In the spring of 2021, Jonathan Fournel was revealed on the international scene at the age of 27 when he won the prestigious Queen Elisabeth International Grand Prix-Queen Mathilde Prize.

What is striking about Jonathan Fournel's playing, beyond his breathtaking technical ease and his wide range of colours, is the balance between exquisite refinement and a wild instinct, between a very natural lyricism and a limpidity that translates into a great maturity in his approach to works.

Chamber music is also an integral part of his artistic career and he performs with various musicians and ensembles such as Anne Bella, Gautier Capuçon, Rémi Delangle, Augustin Dumay, Hildegarde Fesneau, Mohammed Hiber, Victor Julien-Laferrière, Christine Lee, Chi Li, David Petrlik, Vassilena Serafimova, the Akilone Quartet, the Quatuor Hermès and Modigliani.
Jonathan Fournel was named classical revelation by ADAMI in 2017 and is supported by the Colas Foundation, the Fondation Goéland and the Fondation " les Allumeurs d'Étoiles ". Jonathan will be signed to the Alpha Classics label in the summer of 2021 and will release a first Brahms album.
In the words of Marie-Aude Roux in the columns of Le Monde: "Naturalness, musicality and poetry characterise Jonathan Fournel's playing, whether in Mozart's Concerto No. 18 KV 456, which has a sovereign clarity and lyricism (...) or Brahms' Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, which are conducted with fervour and an undeniable sense of drama".
