Miséricorde Chapel of Black Penitents
Historic site and monument, Religious heritage, Classified, 12th C, Baroque
in Breil-sur-Roya
-
The facade of the Misericorde chapel is a very good example of 17th century Baroque architecture strongly marked by breaks in the lines of composition that provide a play of shadows and lights.
-
This chapel, the seat of the Confraternity of the Black Penitents of Mercy, is placed under the name of the Discoloration of Saint John the Baptist. His prior Milan Rostagni, a prominent local, began his construction in 1650 and had it attached to the Archconfraternity of Mercy of Rome. This building, with its remarkable colonnade façade, is being restored.
