Many moons ago, this beach was an anchorage for Roman vessels come to load up with stone from the surrounding quarries.

Centuries later, the Marseille-born actor Fernandel chose to set up home in Carry-le-Rouet at the "Villa des Mille Roses", offering panoramic views over the open sea and little fishing port so dear to him. At the time, a stone staircase ran down from the villa to a private beach.
Today, Fernandel has passed on, the villa has been sold and the beach has now been opened to the public again thanks to French coastal laws. Renamed the "Plage de la calanque de Fernandel", this handkerchief-size stretch of shingle covers no more than 100 square metres, but is a wonderful departure point for discovering the stunning sea beds of the Côte Bleue coast armed with a mask and snorkel.
