Shepherds' feast of Saint Roch and Farmers' Festival

Traditions and folklore, Traditional festival, Animals, Bands, Agriculture, Regional Products in Tende
  • The Brotherhood of Saint Roch was founded in the 12th century. The Shepherds had then gathered in order to help their members in case of serious difficulties (diseases, bereavement, droughts, epidemics...)

  • They placed themselves under the protection of St. Roch who saved them from the plague. The capital of this society was made up of ewes whose fruit was milk and lambs. Today this association survives thanks to the donations collected during the feasts of St. Roch and St. Michael. Every year a couple of shepherds, the "prieurs" are called to prepare the feast according to tradition.
