Tender moments

At the Southern Alps' educational farms

Do your kids love animals? Of course they do! Spend some quality time with them at the Southern Alps’ educational farms, in the company of friendly farmers delighted to introduce you to their furry or feathery companions. What’s more, you’ll enjoy a fascinating insight into their life in the mountains, while savouring some fabulous farm produce.

Feed the goats at La Ferme du Col

Located near Gap in the village of Jarjaye in the Hautes-Alpes area, La Ferme du Col is home to absolutely adorable Angora goats, yaks from Central Asia, alpacas and ostriches. Feeding the baby goats and lambs with a bottle is the star activity here, and your little cherubs will love joining in the fun and petting the animals in their pens to their heart’s content. The cereals grown at this farm are used to make flour, beer and delicious crêpes. Learn how to make your own cereal flakes with a very-novel workshop, or discover how mohair is produced, from goat to sweater! Once you’ve tried a top-quality mohair sweater you won’t want anything else… A genuine treasure trove, the nature museum and its fabulous collection are also a must while you’re visiting. Meanwhile, little adventurers can enjoy a walk dotted with riddles and hidden animals, or a donkey or pony ride. Don’t forget to take home a little local souvenir made on site – you’ll find a great choice at the farm shop!

Farm fun at La Ferme du Mercantour

Welcome to Valdeblore at the gateway to Mercantour National Park and the delightful Ferme du Mercantour, run by the Ducrez family for the last 40 years. More than just a farm, it’s a genuine institution! What’s more, this wandering farm also takes its animals to nearby towns, to give people a taste of country life. The farm tours are topped with a great choice of activities including horse and pony rides amid mountain pastures and peaks. Or you might prefer a horse and cart ride for a magical moment of togetherness, evoking childhood memories or scenes from a romantic novel… If your kids would like to spend more up-close-and-personal time with the animals, they can take part in a farmhand training course where they’ll learn how to look after and feed the animals and give a bottle to the little ones while enjoying an invigorating breath of fresh air. What better way to delve into the rural world? You can also opt for a family farm holiday with accommodation courtesy of the on-site guest rooms and self-catering cottage.

A family escape at La Colline des Lutins

Let’s head to Le Vernet, a little village in the Alpes de Haute Provence area home to a mini educational farm baptized La Colline des Lutins. Much loved by families seeking a back-to-nature experience, the farm offers a plethora of activities for every age and taste, including pony rides, treasure hunts, water pistol fights, giant wooden games and puppet shows, to name but a few! You can also have fun feeding the hungry goats, ducks, rooster, geese, hens and rabbits. Don’t miss the “sentier sensoriel” walk, to be enjoyed barefoot in fine weather – a conscious walking experience that promises to awaken your senses. Last but not least, have fun frolicking with the miniature donkeys, Highland cows, Valais Nez Noir sheep and ponies before settling down with all the family for a well-earned picnic. Watch out though – you might find some other little creatures trying to get in on the feast…

Discover cheesemaking at La Vacherie de Chastillon

Are you a cheese fiend? If so, this excursion is simply made for you. The Chastillon dairy in Mercantour National Park is a foodie’s paradise! Located in the centre of the Isola 2000 ski resort, this cheesemaker offers a fabulous selection of local dairy produce, perfect for topping up your hamper. Pop in after your ski session or summer walk to drool in front of the array of goodies lovingly made in keeping with the strictest Piedmont traditions: raw milk cheeses, rigatello, reblochon, whole yoghurts and fromage frais – simply too good to resist! Don’t miss a visit to the workshop to see how the products are prepared; you can also watch the cows being milked and gorgeous little calves being fed!

Donkey days at La Ferme du Coq à l’Ane

They’re so cute you just want to cuddle them! At La Ferme du Coq à l’Ane, nestling at the heart of the Baronnies Regional Nature Reserve, donkeys live happily alongside goats, pigs, cows, rabbits, hens and other farm animals. The farm’s Provencal goats also produce exceptional cheeses – you can sample them during your tour of the farm and dairy, while learning how these extraordinary (organic) goat cheeses are made. And of course, your kids will love riding on their new favourite friend – the donkey! They’ll also be able to learn all about the local wild plants and Alpine flora that flourishes in the mountains.

Heading to the heights at Au Doux Mélèze

Set gazing out over Alpine peaks, Au Doux Mélèze is a mini farm perched at an altitude of 1,300 metres in the peaceful valley of Blanche Serre-Ponçon, just next to the village resort of Montclar. Get ready for a back-to-nature experience to remember! You’ll love meeting Claire, a saffron grower and alpaca breeder who lives with her beloved animals on the farm’s 15 acres of hilly land surrounded by bubbling Alpine rivers. Located just 10 minutes from Serre-Ponçon lake, this talented lady farmer is also a saffron specialist committed to eco-friendly growing methods. Her refined and elegant saffron tea is truly to die for… You can also take part in a felting, weaving or wool spinning workshop, while your little ones enjoy a fabulous pony ride and treasure hunt!
