Top activities by the French Ski Schools

in the French Southern Alps

Easily recognisable with their red and white ski suits, the ESF instructors stand out in the French Southern Alps ski resorts, especially when they have a cluster of little ones in tow all ready to race down the slopes. Along with skiing activities, they introduce young and old to the new sports and leisure activities in the French Southern Alps and share their passion in the good, fresh air!

All you need to know about ESF Alpes du Sud

Working as an association, these ski schools in the French Southern Alps aim at a transition towards a skiing/multi-activity mix. The ski schools are to be found in the Dévoluy, Guillestrois Queyras, Briançonnais, Champsaur, Serre-Ponçon, Ubaye and in the Mercantour and offer a melting pot of off-piste activities – Nordic, fun and after-ski – to discover in the Hautes-Alpes, Alpes de Haute Provence and Alpes-Maritimes. In all, 7 Nordic areas and 1857 instructors trained by ENSA (Ecole Nationale de Ski et d’Alpinisme) and specialized in all winter sports: Alpine skiing, off-piste, freestyle, snowboarding, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing. All the ESF give group or tailored skiing or snowboard lessons with attentive instructors to introduce the whole family to new experiences, master the runs and perfect their technique.

The most exciting activities to try with the ESF!

For guaranteed thrills and pleasure, come and discover laser shooting which imitates the conditions du biathlon with an ESF instructor in the resort of Montclar. Hikers may prefer Freerando which is taking off in most ESFs, in the era of climate transition. Winter sports enthusiasts, have you heard of Telemark? Free your heels in the resort of Pra Loup and ski down a giant slalom course. Have fun on a Snakegliss ride with your friends! Get on this snow snake for an exhilarating toboggan ride with an aperitif break at the top and admire the whole valley before launching into the descent on the runs of Superdévoluy and La Joue du Loup. At the ESF in Auron, try an Airboard ride or relax by the fireside with “balade & casse-croûte“ for a memorable evening in a shepherd’s hut. With adapted handi-skiing lessons, the pleasures of winter sports are open to everyone! The foodies among you can try the “Raquettes terroir” in Les Orres around a campfire, great for taking you back to the days of your memories of holiday camps! At the same time in the ESF of La Colmiane, Val d’Allos – la Foux or Le Seignus, Grand Puy, Chabanon or Sainte Anne La Condamine, get your legs in shape with cross-country skiing or biathlon, rivalled by snowshoe outings.

Special activities for kids/families in the mountains!

For our little adventurers, the resort of Serre-Chevalier has it all planned! The Petits Trappeurs formula (5-12 years) will allow you to discover the mountains on snowshoes, observe wildlife following the traces of animals and even build an igloo, followed by a snack to build up your energy. Looking for unusual experiences for you and your tribe? Head for the resort of Montgenèvre with an escape game on the theme of avalanche rescue. In Briançon, you’ll go up in the gondola and ride the SNOOC down the groomed run; a new winter sport with specialised instructors. Great for some good laughs! The 5-13-year-olds also love treasure hunts with the ESF instructors at the resort of Montclar, which end with the discovery of how the device to find avalanche victims works. A real surprise! And with the ESF in Risoul, it’s freestyle! On the menu: freecamp Ski, freecamp Snowboard or freecamp Coaching for teenagers and adults. And last of all, there’s no age limit for skiing or winter sports at the ESF in Isola 2000, and the littles can begin with the Club Piou-Piou and then follow one sole target: getting their first star. Besides winter sports lessons, the ESF of the French Southern Alps host discovery classes to introduce kids to the joys of the mountains in the summer.
