The Alps: Mountain Biking in the Hills!

Between the mountains and the clean air, the trails in the Alps are a real treat for mountain bikers. Are you ready to attempt one of the major routes of the FFC (French Cycling Federation) or even a night-time ride? You can also opt for an electric bike for a less strenous jaunt.

FFC Itineraries

For the best-trained cyclists

Three of the eleven largest crossings in France, as certified by the French Cycling Federation, cross the southern Alps. Firstly, there is the inescapable Grande Traversée des Hautes-Alpes à VTT, which covers 350 kilometres and 17,600 metres of elevation between Grave-Villar d’Arène and Laragne-Montéglin. The Alpes-Provence crossing winds its way through the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence area, from the Col de Larche to Manosque. The more seasoned cyclists attempt the Transverdon, connecting the Col d’Allos to Gréoux-les-Bains.

VTT by Night

Explore the wilds after dark

How does a bike ride at night sound to you? Located in Château-Arnoux, the Base VTT du Val du Durance is the largest mountain bike base in the region, offering four routes – even after sunset. This is a first in France! Of course, you must have a helmet, headlamp, reflective vest, and front and rear lights. Whatever happens, you certainly won’t regret the experience.

Electric Bikes

A joy for every level of cyclist

Chantal Bonaglia is the Master VTT 2008 world champion and the 2009 runner-up. But for her, the pleasure of pedalling in high altitudes shouldn’t be just for the sporting greats! So, in 2017 she decided to equip her Barcelonnette-based,  Rando-Passion company with electric bikes. “Pure pleasure and we’re still moving our legs!” she raves. Great news for beginners – who can now try mountain biking without any worries.
