When geology becomes poetry... This emblematic site of the Haute-Provence Geopark will allow you to imagine a few shorebirds strolling along the beaches... 20 million years ago!
The bird footprint sites in the Bès valley represent the capture in stone of an ephemeral moment. The landscape at the time was that of a shallow marine gulf, bounded to the north and east by land, the foothills of the young sub-alpine ranges. This gulf, lined with beaches, accumulated over 1,000 m of sediment, "recording" both the history of marine life and tectonic deformations. These deposits constitute a veritable archive that preciously preserves the Earth's memory.
A hiking trail runs through the site, linking it to the nearby Facibelle blade and the Roche Rousse sanctuary, a contemporary artistic creation by hermann de vries. The site offers magnificent panoramic views of Vieil Esclangon, La Colle (panorama d'Esclangon) and the overlapping Digne nappe.
