The monuments of Nice

Discovering Nice's heritage, between history and tourism

Located in the east of the French Riviera, the city has remarkable monuments. Let’s go together to meet an exceptional architectural wealth, and discover some of the most beautiful monuments of Nice!

The Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption

Located in downtown Nice, the Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption was built in the 19th century in a neo-Gothic style reminiscent of the great cathedrals of Paris, Angers, Amiens and Reims. This monument was intended to reinforce the links between the population of Nice and France, after the annexation of the county of Nice.

The facade is dominated by two towers of 25 meters high, and decorated with a large rose window that represents scenes of the mystery of the Assumption.

The Excelsior Régina Palace

In the 19th century, Nice became a popular destination for rich tourists. European royalty, aristocrats and the upper middle class took refuge there in winter to escape the cold. The tourist season begins in November and ends in May. Luxury hotels were built to accommodate this rich clientele.

The Régina is a luxury hotel in operation between 1897 and 1935, located on the heights of Nice. Its 400 rooms welcome rich customers, and offer all the modern comfort in a privileged setting.  It has been converted into a residential building. Its Belle Époque style façade can be admired at 71, boulevard de Cimiez. The garden of the old hotel still exists. Closed to the public, it is reserved for the residents of the Excelsior Regina Palace.

The Negresco

A luxury hotel, the Negresco is one of the most emblematic monuments of Nice. Located on the Promenade des Anglais, facing the Mediterranean Sea, it combines neoclassical style facades and ornaments that evoke the Baroque trend. You can admire this magnificent building by going to 37 Promenade des Anglais.

Would you like to discover the interior of the Negresco? You can book a room in the hotel, or a table in one of the restaurants. You can also have a drink at the bar, while admiring the walnut woodwork and the 17th century tapestry. The dream becomes accessible, for a timeless interlude in a temple of luxury.

The Palais De La Méditerranée

Built in the 1920s, the Palais de La Méditerranée was originally a new casino with a daring architecture. But after financial difficulties, the building was destroyed in 1990: only its Art Deco façade remains.

A luxury hotel and casino have been rebuilt, and continue to welcome tourists, revelers and gamblers from around the world. The Hyatt Regency Nice Palais De La Méditerranée, located at 13, Promenade des Anglais, has retained its monumental facade illuminated with a thousand lights. The building also houses a theater.

The Saint-Nicolas Cathedral of Nice

Appreciated by the Russian aristocracy, Nice welcomed an important Orthodox community at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Built at the beginning of the 20th century in a typically Russian architectural style, the Saint-Nicolas cathedral in Nice adopts a Greek cross plan. It is built with noble materials: white limestone from the Côte d’Azur, facing bricks from the Rhine, pink granite from Italy, earthenware and glazed tiles from Florence…

Its facades and colorful domes will transport you to the banks of the Moskva River or to St. Petersburg! You can admire this monument of Orthodox art by going to Nicholas II Avenue.

The Mount Alban Fort

Built in the 16th century to protect the roadstead of Villefranche-sur-Mer, this fortress was once intended to ensure the security of the population of Nice. Its powerful walls dominate the landscape, and offer an incredible panorama of the Bay of Angels, Cap d’Ail, Saint-Jean Cap Ferrat, the tip of Bordighera, the Massif de l’Estérel… You can visit the fort, by reserving your tickets online or by purchasing them at the Heritage Center.

The Mont Alban fort is surrounded by a vast expanse of nature. The Mont Boron Park is a popular destination for walks with a view of Nice and the French Riviera.

The Mamac of Nice

Do you appreciate contemporary architecture?  Inaugurated in 1990, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Mamac) was designed by the architects Yves Bayard and Henri Vidal. Designed in a tetrapod arch, and located on the Cours du Paillon and the axis of the old National 7, the building is inspired by the neoclassical style and offers a modern vision. The terraces are designed as belvederes, open to the city.

You can admire the Mamac by going to Yves Klein square. You can also visit the museum, and discover the permanent collections and the temporary exhibitions.
