The Goumiers military plot is located in the Passons cemetery. Situated on the heights of Aubagne at the foot of the Garlaban mountains, this peaceful spot preserves the memory of the brave soldiers of the African troops who died fighting to liberate France.
Dedicated to the fighters of the Goums, the military area of the Passons cemetery is a reminder of the important role played by these Moroccan troops in the liberation of Marseille.
Following the Provence landings on August 15, 1944, they formed a major military force under the command of General Guillaume. On August 21, 1944, the soldiers liberated Aubagne as they advanced towards the city of Marseille. A few days later, they reinforced French and Resistance troops by attacking the Germans, who had retreated to Notre-Dame de la Garde.
These valiant goumiers fought for the liberation of France, some at the risk of their lives.
