The Church of Notre-Dame de la Seds stands within the historic Ville des Tours of Aix en Provence. It was rebuilt in 1853 by the architect Henri Révoil on the foundations of a much older church, dating back to the 4th century.
It was the city church of Aix for many years and contained the relics of Mitre of Aix, a Christian martyr who died in Aix. The site of the Church of Notre-Dame de la Seds is marked by the presence of an ancient theatre, buried underground since the 5th century and only discovered in 2004.
After the closure of the theatre, it was dismantled, the site filled in, and buildings erected above it. The present Church of Notre-Dame de la Seds dates from 1853. It was built in the Romanesque-Byzantine style.
