Located on the edge of the pre-Alps of Digne, on the eastern bank of the Durance, this town in the Alpes de Haute Provence used to be a stopover for rivergoing merchants, Escalo in Provençal dialect.
In the Gallo-Roman period, when the Durance River was still navigable, l'Escale was considered as an important river port. The Bourguet site, located 1km north of the village was at the time a major inhabitation pole. The excavations carried out in 1960-1961 before the flooding under the waters of the Château-Arnoux Lake enabled to discover the most important series of bronzes (statuettes and busts) in Haute-Provence.
The old village
In the Middle Age, the village expanded on the hillside of Vière and on the "Hamlet of the Host" ("Hameau de l'Hôte"). The village counts around 1.400 inhabitants.
Ornithologic site
The ornithology fanatics can watch about 140 bird species on the lake banks, 2 hours by walk, accessible for everyone. There is a leaflet available and interpretation panels along the track that describes the different types of birds.
