Andy Goldsworthy's singular experience as an internationally acclaimed artist
artist Andy Goldsworthy, who imagined a project combining contemporary art
and safeguarding rural heritage in the protected area of the Haute-Provence Geopark, around Digne les Bains.
At once a witness to local rural life and a clandestine hideout for the Resistance, a work of art and a stopover for hikers, the former Ferme Belon is now one of the Musée Gassendi's Refuges d'Art, designed by Andy Goldsworthy.
While the singular art of this Scottish Land Art artist anchors the building in its natural environment, it also draws its inspiration from the intimate memories of the stones to preserve the memory of a historical tragedy.
Ideally isolated, the abandoned farmhouse housed the maquis school in January 1944. On February 14, the Germans surrounded the camp, deporting 11 Maquis and dynamiting the building.
In the darkness of the first floor, Goldsworthy installed a tangle of luminous white stone arches to convey an idea of movement in the confined atmosphere of the men lurking in the shadows.
