The arch in Carpentras is the only remaining testimony of the Roman period. It was built in 1st century AD under the Emperor Augustus to commemorate the Roman victory over the Barbarians

Before becoming papal property, Carpentras was a Celtic settlement, called Carpentoracte Meminorum, then a Roman town called Forum Neronis. This arch remains from that far distant past. The arch is from the 1st century AD, and commemorates Rome’s victory over the barbarians. See the magnificent sculpture showing two captives chained to a trophy.
