This stele bears witness to the gratitude of the people of Callas towards Emmanuel Ricard, a young Resistance fighter who died defending his native village. Soberly engraved, it also honors all the other soldiers who died on this site.
In August 1944, the success of the Provence landings forced the Germans to retreat. Callassian resistance fighter Emmanuel Ricard and his group fought alongside the Allies to liberate the area. These days of fighting cost many soldiers their lives. Emmanuel Ricard fell to German bullets on August 17.
Surrounded by a wrought-iron gate that protects it from weeds, a short obelisk stands on the outskirts of the village of Callas in memory of this young local maquisard. The double dedication also honors the "allied officers and soldiers who fell for the liberation of Callas".
