Tribute to Gabriel Besson, known as Biel, a young Resistance fighter murdered in March 1946.
Born in Manosque on March 08, 1910, Gabriel Besson was a house painter and one of the finest figures of the Resistance in the Lower Alps.
Early on, he joined forces with Louis Martin Bret, and played a key role in the Combat and MUR movements. As a member of the AS departmental headquarters and head of the Groupes francs des Basses Alpes, he was involved in a wide range of activities. In September 1943, he joined the SAP. He had the full confidence of René Char, for whom he remains one of the most serious and effective members of the Resistance. Demobilized in August 1945, with no work, he began trucking local brown coal to the Manosque train station. At the end of one of these transports, on the night of February 28 to March 01, he was shot in the back with a rifle.
