The plaque located in the city centre on Avenue Clemenceau recalls the epic of this division.
Responding to General de Gaulle's desire to create a new armed force to liberate the country from its occupiers, the 1st Free French Division was officially created in June 1942.
This troop brought together volunteers from all walks of life, including many African combatants. In 1944, it was integrated into Army B, the first French army commanded by General de Lattre de Tassigny, and landed at Cavalaire on August 16, 1944. Two days later, it headed for Hyères, crossing La Londe-les-Maures on August 19.
The important role and military successes of the 1st DFL made this armed force an essential pillar on the road to Liberation. The plaque on display in the heart of the town is part of our duty to remember all those men who fought for a free France.
