The Station Biologique de la Tour du Valat was founded in 1954 by Luc Hoffmann. An independent organization, the Tour du Valat was declared a non-profit foundation in 1976.
The Tour du Valat aims to promote and contribute directly to the conservation of Mediterranean wetlands. The central part has been designated a Voluntary Nature Reserve since 1984. It is the largest in France. The station and reserve are only open to the public for 2 days a year, during an open day in January and February. Access to the Station is normally restricted to scientists.
