The Greater Avignon conservatory, named after Olivier Messiaen, is housed in the former Avignon 18th-century courthouse, and has nearly 3000 m2 of workspace.
Records attest to music being taught in Avignon since 1828, in a municipal music school teaching music theory and song. In 1856 a municipal music school for instruments was created. This became the national music school in 1916, then an official branch of the Paris national conservatory in 1948, named after Olivier Messiaen in 1984.

The Olivier Messiaen Conservatory is an important feature of the local cultural scene. Known for its high level, it reveals talent and provides quality artistic teaching for the Grand Avignon area, which has ambitious projects for teaching of the arts.
It serves 2 counties and 2 regions. Over 2000 students attend classes every year, in the fields of music, dance and theatre.
