The exiles

Centre ville, Quai Charles de Gaulle, 83110 Sanary-sur-Mer
In the heart of one of the darkest periods in our history, Sanary and its surroundings have, provided a haven of tolerance and refuge for nearly 400 artists over nearly 10 years.
Writers, journalists, philosophers and politicians fled the Nazi regime.
Depending on their means and the length of their stay, the exiles take a room in a hotel, a furnished apartment with a host family. The wealthiest rent a villa.

They therefore comply with the administrative procedures for authorising residence or renewing their identity documents.

They meet each other at each other's homes, or in cafés, such as the Navy, the Nautical or the Lyon café, to play chess.

Sanary then took a title of nobility of which she remains very proud, that of "the world capital of German-speaking literature".
