The “Souterroscope” of Grotte de Baume Obscure

The Préalpes d’Azur is famous for its sun-fed landscapes, where the last Alpine reliefs meet the coastline of the French Riviera. People come here to spend their vacation, to revitalize, to increase the number of outdoor activities and to discover picturesque villages. What if one of the region’s most precious treasures was waiting for you underground? Water has indeed dug many caves in the heart of this limestone massif. The Souterroscope of the Grotte de Baume Obscure offers an astonishing spectacle to visitors, throughout a fitted out underground route.

Grotte de Baume Obscure

For millions of years, water has been seeping into the heart of a plateau overlooking the Gorges de la Siagne. They have patiently dug the limestone rock and, drop by drop, have fashioned spectacular works that have long remained secret and out of reach of mankind.

Numerous concretions, stalactites, stalagmites, candles and columns, offer visitors a wonder of every moment. Enhanced by sound and light animation, they bear witness to the creativity of Mother Nature, capable of erecting forms of surprising elegance, with a grace worthy of the greatest sculptors.

The Grotte de Baume Obscure, which has been fitted out and secured, now welcomes visitors who are seduced by an underground show that is as magical as it is unusual.

Open house visit or guided tour?

The Souterroscope allows you to discover the cave at your own pace, while enjoying the play of light, songs and sound animations that highlight the most remarkable elements. A 700-meter-long marked trail allows you to discover the different successive rooms at your own pace. Visitors can thus enjoy a scenography that enhances every detail while achieving the feat of accompanying the tranquility of the places without ever disturbing it.

The guided tours meet the expectations of the most curious visitors, who are eager to know all the secrets of Grotte de Baume Obscure. They will also be able to learn more about the exploration of the underground cavities and caves, while getting acquainted with the geological and human history of the Préalpes d’Azur.

An underground treasure hunt

Visits with treasure hunts are particularly fun and appeal to children and parents alike. At the beginning of the visit, a facilitator tells a story and gives participants a scroll. They will have to find fantastic characters well hidden in the different rooms and solve riddles. The winners will have the privilege of opening the treasure chest containing semi-precious stones (jasper, tiger’s eye, hematite, agate, etc.).

These fun visits with a treasure hunt are also an invitation to discovery and encourage participants to pay attention to the smallest details throughout the course. Allow a maximum of two hours to solve the riddles and find the mischievous and enchanting characters hidden in the caves.

Did you enjoy the treasure hunt? The Grotte de Baume Obscure can also be used as a backdrop for many other games organized by the “Rêves & Veillées” agency: discovery games, big games, investigation and detective games.
