Stage 6, step by step: Marseille l’Estaque to Marseille Saint‑Victor

This part of the trail takes you into the heart of the Phocaean city on this fairly short 6th stage. You’ve got your legs now! The itinerary gets closer to the sea and opens on to some pretty harbours.

20 km – Length: 5 h – Blue, Yellow and Red Marking

  1.  down Traverse de Port de Bouc on the right to the marina (Port de Plaisance). Veer left when you reach the bakers (boulangerie) and follow signs to the Plage de l’Estaque until you reach No. 726, and veer left again to go up the steps. Go down Traverse de la Sacomanne on the right and Boulevard Fenouil. At the roundabout, go up Rue du Docteur Zamenhof on the left for Saint-Henri. After the entrance to ABB, use the pedestrian amenities to reach the stadium. At the crossroads, go up Rue Rabelais to the right for the veterinary clinic. After No. 196, take Rue du Cinéma and then Boulevard d’Annam on the left. After No. 43, cross the car park on the right and then go left for the pedestrian passage on the right after No. 1. Come out onto Rue Emmanuel Eydoux and turn right. At the René Allio roundabout, go under the railway tracks on the left and to Parc de La Pelouque. Go up Chemin de la Pelouque and go under the second and third bridges. Turn right and go up Rue Albin Meylan, towards A 55 motorway. At the roundabout, go left and across the fourth exit, Boulevard Henri Barnier, and take the path which goes up to the right towards the commercial area. Go up on the left along the guardrail on Avenue Rellys.

2.      When you reach the Delmont roundabout, go straight up Avenue Millie-Mathys. Separation from GR® de Pays 2013 Marseille Provence Métropole.

Go straight on at the next roundabout onto Avenue Jenny Helia. At the next roundabout, take the first exit to the right onto Avenue de Saint-Antoine. At the traffic lights, continue to the left in Traverse du Viaduc and then go right down Rue Fortuné Chaillan. Go past Collège Jean Moulin, over a little bridge and under a road. After the passage above the A7 motorway, stay on the right and at the traffic lights go down the steps on the left to Chemin de Saint-Antoine à Saint-Joseph. Go up to the right. [N Viewpoint of the Les Aygalades cave on the right]. Then go down to come out in Rue René d’Anjou, at the level of the footbridge over the railway tracks. Go past the fountain of Sainte Madeleine and the church of Les Aygalades.

Go straight on, go under the motorway (Autoroute Nord) and straight on again on Avenue Ibrahim Ali. Stay on the right and at the traffic lights go right towards the station (gare SNCF) on Rue le Chatelier. At the next traffic lights, go left under the railway tracks. Go straight up Rue le Chatelier, towards Groupe Scolaire Saint-Louis Gare, as far as the traffic lights. Straight on again on Chemin Vicinal No. 45 from Saint-Louis to Le Rove. Go past the church (Eglise Saint-Louis), and stay on the left along the cemetery to the arches of the aqueduct. Turn left for Lycée Saint-Exupéry. 3. Just after the bus stop on the right, take the steps going down to the harbour, below the imposing Lycée, and follow the gravel path beside the buildings. You’ll see a bunker on your left Take the right-hand steps and over a bridge above the railway tracks. At the fork, go up the surfaced road. When you get to the corniche, go between two wire fences and down to the right on a cement path. At the bottom, veer left in a hairpin bend for Chemin du Littoral. Stay well to the left. The walk goes up towards a pedestrian walkway and veers away from the motorway to come out in Traverse Santi. Go along the retaining wall on the left, past Collège Rimbaud and up 400 m. You will see a grated bridge above the railway tracks.

4. When you reach No. 57 and just before a bend to the left, go up some steps to the right. Continue straight on via Chemin des Meules which goes up and then down towards the three towers of Résidence Cap Janet. Go into the car park on the right and you will see two sets of steps which you can take to go through the towers. Go around the stadium on the left-hand side until you come to a little street going downhill. Just after No. 65, turn left into a little street which goes along beside a Foyer Adoma, and straight on down some steps going around the building on the right-hand side. At the bottom of the steps, turn left and go straight on for 450 m. When you reach No. 68 Chemin du Littoral, veer left into a street and go up some steps. At the top, take the first right, Rue de l’Alliance, then straight on up Traverse de la Madrague and come out onto Chemin de la Madrague Ville.

5. At the red light, turn right and go past the huge hangars of Les Puces. Go straight down for 1 km, until you reach the motorway. After the bend to the right at the JPA warehouses, you will see on your right some steps going to the footbridge over the railway tracks. When you have crossed the bridge, turn left to cross the road. Continue, with caution, under the Autoroute du Littoral (motorway) to the CMA-CGM tower, go past it, following the wharves.

6. Go past Le Silo auditorium. Cross over and go around behind Les Docks. Then veer right on Place de la Joliette and you will come to the wharves. Go past Hangar J1 and Esplanade du J4. After the MUCEM, follow the waterfront and go around Fort Saint-Jean. After the former customs buildings (bâtiments des Douanes,) go up the steps on the left to reach the Church of Saint-Laurent. Turn right into Rue Saint-Laurent. After No. 2 Rue St-Thomé, go into Place de Lenche on the left, and follow sign for Le Panier. At the end, you will see the steps of the Montée des Accoules, which go up and then down again to Rue de la Prison. Go around the Hôtel de Ville and take the ferry boat or walk around the Vieux-Port. Go into Place aux Huiles, and at the end, take the steps on the right – Montée Ludovic Henri Monnier. Turn left and walk up Rue Fort-Notre-Dame.
