The French Southern Alps peak at 4,102 meters in altitude at the Barre des Écrins in the eponymous mountain range. From the French Riviera to the Écrins massif, the mountains in the south of France host numerous ski resorts and thousands of kilometers of ski slopes, featuring diverse atmospheres and ski areas.
To the south, the ski resorts of Mercantour await you just a few kilometers as the crow flies from the French Riviera. Some resorts, such as Isola 2000, even boast ski slopes with views of the Mediterranean Sea! Valberg, easily accessible from Nice and the coastal resorts of the French Riviera, offers a variety of winter sports activities.
The Queyras is renowned for its village resorts: Saint-Véran, the highest (and most beautiful) village in France, or Arvieux, along the Col de l’Izoard route, feature beautiful ski areas and have managed to preserve their village charm. You’ll enjoy an authentic holiday, surrounded by unspoilt mountain scenery.
Fans of the great outdoors can head to the Serre Chevalier Vallée resort, which boasts the largest ski area in the Southern Alps, with 80 downhill ski runs and 45 kilometres of Nordic ski runs. Briançon and the villages that make up the ski resort offer a wide choice of accommodation, hotels and activities.Other ski resorts offer large ski areas: Vars and Risoul with the Forêt Blanche ski area, Montgenèvre with the Voie Lactée ski area, Pra-Loup and Val d’Allos with the Espace Lumière. These large ski areas feature modern ski lifts and offer numerous activities beyond skiing for relaxation, entertainment, or discovering local cuisine and heritage.
