The land of Fayence

In the east of the Var department, the land of Fayence offers bucolic landscapes and picturesque villages.

Near the Préalpes d’Azur, the country owes its name to the village that occupies a central geographical position. Composed of wooded hills and agricultural mountain plains, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Var hinterland.

The perched villages in the land of Fayence

Men have occupied these lands for several millennia. They built villages on the top of hills to protect themselves from invasions. You will find houses with golden facades and tiled roofs, narrow streets, shady squares, stores, cafes and restaurants.

Seillans, classified as the most beautiful village in France, has many fountains. This medieval village is also famous for its vaulted passages and its paved streets.

Fayence embodies the Provençal way of life. The EcoMusée du Pays de Fayence, located at the entrance of the village, plunges you into the daily life of the farmers who made these lands prosper in the last centuries.

Montauroux also has many fountains. Heritage lovers will be able to admire the St Barthélémy chapel, built in the 17th century, whose barrel vault has been entirely covered with painted wooden panels.

All the villages of the Pays de Fayence have their own identity and tourist attractions.

The lake of Saint-Cassien

The lake of Saint-Cassien, with an area of 420 hectares, offers many water activities.

Swimming is allowed, and a supervised beach is accessible free of charge in the commune of Tanneron. You can also explore the lake of Saint-Cassien by pedal boat, stand-up paddle, kayak, or have fun on the inflatable installations.

Many hiking trails have been laid out around the lake. They invite you to discover the sumptuous landscapes of the Pays de Fayence, and to admire a remarkable historical heritage. The remains of the Montauroux aqueduct demonstrate the ingenuity of the Romans in supplying their towns with water. To the south-west of the Saint-Cassien lake, the ruins of the Mapasset dam bear witness to a tragic episode in the recent history of the region.

Outdoor activities

You can hike in the hills and valleys of the land of Fayence. Many marked trails offer a multitude of itineraries, of all levels, for beginners or experienced hikers. We advise you to bring appropriate equipment, including walking shoes, sufficient water, a hat and sunglasses in summer.
