Barreau lake

Route de Maillane, 13210 Saint-Rémy-de-Provence
Discover Lac de Barreau in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
A unique site in Saint-Rémy, in contrast to the dry landscapes of the Alpilles, the Lac de Barreau is an oasis of biodiversity, where plants typical of wetlands are home to atypical species of birds. Among the sixty or so varieties found here, the Little Bittern and Purple Heron are on the red list of endangered species in mainland France.

The Barreau lake is located 4km from the centre of Saint-Rémy de Provence (D5, towards Maillane). Dug out in the 1980s to drain rainwater, the lake has become a popular tourist destination during the hot summer months.

The Lac de Barreau site has been landscaped for picnics (tables and benches) and walks (dirt path all around the lake).

Access is free all year round (not subject to access restrictions in the Alpilles massif during periods of drought).

Swimming is prohibited.
