Morgiou, next to Calanque de Sormiou, is also a popular bathing and walking destination for many Marseillais. It is crossed by the GR98-51 long-distance hiking trail.
Calanque de Morgiou
Situated just next to "Calanque de Sormiou", Morgiou is also a popular bathing and walking spot for the people of Marseille. You can reach the fjord by car outside restricted periods, by foot starting out from the Baumettes quarter, or by boat. Morgiou is characterised by deeper waters than Sormiou, and is partly occupied by a small fishing port still in operation. You can sunbathe in the tiny cove on the left as long as you get your towel down early! Even better, the pretty and flat limestone rocks offer up an excellent solarium.
This is also one of the rare inhabited fjords found on the coast and its little cottages blend perfectly into the backdrop.
If you take the narrow footpath to the right you will come to Cap Morgiou, home to a number of ruined military buildings and offering fabulous views over the Mediterranean. Cap Morgiou is also the site of the famous Cosquer cave - a prehistoric cave discovered in 1991.
