The Massif des Maures is a modest mountain range that stretches for about 60 km between Hyères and Fréjus in the department of Var.
Its highest point is at Signal de la Sauvette, 780 metres above sea level. Certain historians say that the reference to the Moors (Maures in French) is explained by the presence of the Saracens in the area north of the Pyrenees during the 8th and 9th century. Covered in cork oaks and chestnut groves, the “Maures” mountains offer a varied landscape for walkers to enjoy.
