The Alpilles Regional Nature Park and the municipality of Saint-Étienne-du-Grès have created a viewpoint located at the top of the Notre-Dame du Château site, above the chapel.
Financially supported by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region, the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis, the State (FNADT) and the municipality, this new development is part of the Park's Territorial Interpretation Plan. It reflects the commitment of the Park's elected representatives and the municipality to promote sustainable, nature-based tourism, in line with the Park's Charter, to offer visitors a place conducive to discovery and relaxation.
Designed by Atelier aux Iris and built by Passion Acier Design, the belvedere showcases local expertise and materials, in particular Aleppo pine, a species characteristic of the Alpilles. This sustainable wood, used for the decking, is part of the Park's approach to promoting local resources, as has already been done for the cladding of the Maison du Parc.
Beyond the panorama it offers over one of the most emblematic forest areas of the Alpilles, the belvedere becomes a place of awareness and discovery. Educational displays and an information panel invite visitors to take a fresh look at this ‘great pine forest’, its biodiversity and the activities that shape it, whether forestry, pastoralism or nature tourism.
The viewpoint is also an ideal spot for birdwatching, allowing visitors to hear or spot several species emblematic of the Mediterranean forest, such as the eagle owl and the short-toed snake eagle.
This project reflects the commitment of the Alpilles Regional Nature Park and its partners to promoting more respectful use of the area, by showcasing its landscapes, natural environments and cultural heritage.
