Point de vue de Nice

A grandiose, hypnotic view of Nice, whose name comes from the Ligurian radical niss (height, summit) and nissa (water), which gave rise to Nikaïa. Interpreting the landscape: The castle hill, Nice's first city Castellum Nicaea, and its wooded area are at the center of this view. Nice's citadel and walls were destroyed in 1706, destroying the town's vocation as a place of war. In the hollow of the white rock, at the foot of the castle, stands the Monument aux Morts, built in 1927 at Rauba-Capeù, where the wind is so strong that it "steals the hats". Further east, the port of Lympia and its tall, lined-up buildings sport shimmering colors: ochre, pink, beige... a legacy of the Consiglio d'Ornato, set up by King Charles Albert in 1832 to develop and embellish the town. Here are a few landmarks in the city, silhouetted against some remarkable buildings: the Parc Impérial, a former hotel built in 1902 and now a school complex built on the Bermond farming estate, which was home to the Russian imperial family; the Jeanne d'Arc church, with its slender white bell tower; and the former Majestic hotel, a Belle Epoque palace at the foot of Cimiez. This urban landscape, from Mount Boron to Cap de Nice, the port, Rauba Capeù, Castle Hill and the Promenade des Anglais, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021.
