The Vaccarès pond, spread over 6500 ha, is part of a vast complex of brackish ponds of more than 10 000 ha.
From August to April, these ponds welcome tens of thousands of water birds, coming from the north of Europe to spend the bad season in the Camargue (ducks, coots and grebes mainly). In April, terns from Africa come to nest in colonies, along with gulls, seagulls and avocets sedentary. Finally, all year round, they are the privileged feeding grounds of pink flamingos and herons (egrets, grey herons). The fish, very abundant, give place to an active professional fishing at the limit of the Reserve (atherines, eels, muges, sea breams, wolves, soles, carps, breams, pike-perches).
