Lake Puy Vachier lies at the bottom of a basin surrounded by rocky outcrops in a mineral landscape, near the second intermediate station of the cable car, about an hour's walk away.
A pretty larch forest lies below the lake.

For the more athletic, the lake is accessible from the valley, either via La Grave (starting at the Arboretum) with a pleasant walk
through a beautiful larch forest, or from Les Fréaux via a steeper and sometimes vertiginous path!
It is also accessible by the Meije Glacier Cable Cars,
with the easiest route to the refuge starting at the intermediate station at 2,400m. Recently redesigned and widened, it leads to the lake in less than an hour and is accessible to children and even
mountain bikers!
Finally, a half-hour walk away, you can reach the Refuge Evariste Chancel, which overlooks the lake. Its opening dates coincide with those of the cable car...
