Remarkable trees : Araucaria Bidwillii - The Bunya-Bunya

  • Natural wonder
Allée de Namur, 06500 Menton
Large tree with a massive trunk, the Araucaria bidwillii has tough leaves and can reach 50 meters high. It does not tolerate sub-zero temperatures and is therefore mainly cultivated in Mediterranean regions.
A remarkable ancient tree, this coniferous genus of the Araucariaceae family, which has nineteen species, exists in the wild only in South America, Australia, New Caledonia and New Guinea.
Its vernacular name comes from its designation in Australian aboriginal language. As for its scientific name, it owes it to William Jackson Hooker, who named it after John Carne Bidwill, a famous British botanist of the 19th century.
