Native to the Cape in South Africa, Strelitzia augusta is a perennial plant of the Strelitziaceae family.
It has broad evergreen leaves at the end of a long stalk that extends from the foot. The leaves are often shredded by the wind just like those of the banana tree, and the flowers, of exotic aspect, are of white color with the dark blue, almost black beak.
The Strelitzia augusta should not be confused with the traveler's tree which is part of the same family but which, in our region, can only grow in greenhouses.
