Reserve de biosphère transfrontière du Mont Viso

Ristolas, 05460 Abriès-Ristolas
International recognition from UNESCO: the Mont Viso Transfrontier Biosphere Reserve.
This Franco-Italian territory was designated a Biosphere Reserve in 2013 and in 2014 obtained the recognition of Transboundary Reserve: its territory is composed of 108 municipalities, 88 in Italy and 20 in France. This is a recognition of the Man and Biosphere program of UNESCO assigned to territories characterized by a balanced relationship between man and nature.
In 2020, there were 701 biosphere reserves in the world, spread over 120 countries, including 14 in France.
These reserves aim to reconcile the conservation of natural and cultural diversity with economic and social development. They allow for the testing and development of innovative approaches to sustainable development from the local to the international level. They have three zones that allow them to fulfill three main functions: conservation, development and logistical support, without adding additional regulations.
Thus, in the Queyras, the core zone includes the following protected areas: Ristolas Mont Viso National Nature Reserve, Vallon de Bouchouse, Assan Integral Biological Reserve, Gorges du Guil and Alpages de Furfande, which already have regulations at the national level for the conservation of heritage.
The buffer zone corresponds to the perimeter of the Queyras Regional Nature Park.
The cooperation zone extends to the 11 municipalities outside the Park.
The Mount Viso is the emblem of this territory as well as the Lanza salamander, an endemic species that benefits from a specific French-Italian research program. Other operations are carried out in a cross-border manner such as a Franco-Italian museum day on the occasion of the European Heritage Days or a photo contest, the removal of barbed wire relics of the Second World War and the Biosphere Reserve trophies which are awarded annually to initiatives by local actors.
