The Upper Clarée Valley has no fewer than 16 lakes that enjoy special protection. They have been listed in the natural heritage inventory since August 17, 1943.
In the mountains, most lakes are glacial in origin. The retreat of Quaternary glaciers exposed overhangs, called umbilics, which gave rise to these mountain lakes, nestled like jewels amid the ridges. The lake is fed by rainwater, snowmelt, and glacier melt when it still exists upstream. The surrounding landscape and any substances found there give the mountain lake its distinctive color (algae, microfauna, and flora).
The lake is therefore very vulnerable and cannot tolerate any pollution. These little blue treasures of our mountains deserve our respectful attention.
