The Montagnette hills

La Montagnette is an isolated mountain with well-defined contours, located in the extreme north-west of the department.
La Montagnette is a low-altitude mountain (150 m), but with rather steep slopes, particularly on its eastern and western faces where slopes prohibit access by roads. This mountain is also marked by a series of hills and valleys generally oriented north-west / south-east, parallel to the axis of the mistral wind as the valley plain was often occupied by estates with their associated crops. La Montagnette includes the departmental roads D81 and D35.
Located in the climatic area of the Lower Rhone, La Montagnette is characterised by mild average annual temperatures (14°C) and a relatively low rainfall (650 mm / year), characteristic of the Provençal Mediterranean climate. At the mouth of the Rhone Valley, this mountain is also strongly under the influence of the mistral wind, which blows regularly throughout much of the year.
Maintaining important agricultural and pastoral activities, La Montagnette has a relatively low rate of afforestation (30%). The forest populations, mainly located in northern face of the mountain (Barbentane), consist mainly of pine trees (rare deciduous Barbentane and Frigolet populations). The dominant vegetation types are the rosemary, rockrose or Kermes oak (60%) scrubland and the remaining open area hosts crops.
Instead of the traditional walk through Avignon, La Montagnette is particularly popular with the public throughout the year. This is the case of the two ZAPEF present on this mountain: the Barbentane to the north and at the centre, and the Abbey of Saint- Michel de Frigolet, busy on the weekend (300,000 visitors in 2000).
This peak is explained amongst others by the quality of the site, La Montagnette being integrally inscribed with the presence also of several historical monuments. …
