The slab with prints

  • Natural wonder
Ravin de Coste Longue, 04100 Manosque
It was discovered in the rìou of Coste Longue, by Michel Flaven and one was authenticated as being a ronzoterium of the Oligocene (30 MA) in 2003 by Loïc Costeur, researcher at the CNRS.
It is distinguished by a plantar sole with three pads and three fingers. These prints are those of a distant cousin of the rhinoceros, which lived in a region of large brackish water lakes, at the bottom of which accumulated very thick sediments, including more than 800 m of salt, in which are currently stored oil products and gas.
By an exceptional climatic phenomenon this mud dried, hardened and petrified quickly, without erosion or erasure and reached us.
The slab is in the national inventory of geological heritage of the National Museum of Natural History.
