Rocher de Roquebrune

Between the Maures and Estérel massifs

Do not be fooled by its altitude of 373 metres (1,224 feets) : the Rocher de Roquebrune is a prime hiking spot in the Var, with its spectacular landscapes and rocks in shades of red and pink.

As you approach the Roquebrune rock, you enter another world. Erosion has patiently sculpted and carved caves, widened cracks, and shaped the rocks into astonishing forms. Here, mushrooms; there, the silhouette of two Brothers… This fantastic landscape is best explored on foot, either for a few hours’ walk or a full-day hike.

A privileged location between the Maures and the Estérel

The Rocher de Roquebrune, reaching 373 metres high, is a classified natural site of unique beauty located in the commune of Roquebrune-sur-Argens, in the Var. Its strategic position a few kilometres from the Maures and Estérel massifs, as well as its proximity to the beaches of the Côte d’Azur, make it a prime destination for nature lovers and those seeking spectacular landscapes.

At its base flows the Argens, the main river of the Provence Verte, adding a touch of freshness and serenity to this exceptional site. Nearby villages and towns of character, such as Le Muy and Puget-sur-Argens, offer an immersion into Provençal culture and are perfect for excursions lasting a few hours or a day.

The Rocher de Roquebrune is also steeped in legends. One story tells of a young woman who, having vowed to pray and abstain, was pursued by a nobleman whose advances she had refused. Cornered, she prayed to the Holy Virgin, who caused the rock to break, creating a fissure known as the Saint Trou. According to tradition, only virtuous souls can pass through this miraculous opening. Another legend claims that the three large cracks fragmenting the Rocher de Roquebrune appeared at the time of Christ’s death on the cross. The site is a place of pilgrimage, and three large crosses stand at the summit: the current crosses date from 1991.

A rock with legendary origins

The Roquebrune Rock, rising to 373 metres, is much more than just a natural promontory. According to an ancient legend, at the death of Christ on the cross, the rock split into three large crevices, symbolising the three crosses of Calvary. This story left a lasting impression and gave the rock its original name: the Rock of the Three Crosses.

Over the centuries, crosses were erected at the summit in memory of this sacred event. Pilgrimages to the rock became a tradition, attracting devotees from all over the region. The current crosses, erected in 1991 by the sculptor Bernard Venet, replace the old ones that disappeared over time. They pay tribute to three great painters of the “”Crucifixion””: Giotto, Grunewald, and El Greco, adding an artistic dimension to this place already steeped in history.

Today, Roquebrune Rock continues to attract visitors, not only for its spectacular landscapes but also for its rich legendary heritage. Pilgrimages continue, perpetuating an age-old tradition that links faith, art, and nature. When visiting this site, one cannot help but feel the power of its legendary origins and contemplate the crosses that proudly stand at the summit, silent witnesses to a millennia-old history.
