The timeless charm of Simiane-la-Rotonde

A typical Provencal village with a medieval soul…

Follow the quaint old paved streets to the village’s centrepiece – the medieval castle keep that brought Simiane-la-Rotonde to fame. A major milestone in the village’s rich history, the castle is also one of the oldest of its kind built in Provence in the Middle Ages. Its cone-shaped keep is actually the oldest element of the construction and was erected well before the rest of the foundations. Today, it stands guard over the village and offers a landmark visible from afar, together with a gorgeous setting for exhibitions, contemporary artwork and even an ancient music festival… Climb to the top to make the most of the pretty terrace and awe-inspiring vistas over the village rooftops, lavender fields and Alpinepeaks etched against the horizon.

A bird’s eye view of blue fields…

In July and August, the surrounding fields light up with dazzling blue lavender blooms exhaling their inimitable sweet fragrance. You can admire the radiant show from the top of the village. Simiane-la-Rotonde‘s ancient keep stands guard over this precious heritage and the soothing landscapes of the Forcalquierarea – the departure point for many scenic roads . The medieval castle – a listed monument since 1841 – has even dedicated two of its rooms to Provence’s mythical flower and visitors can now enjoy a range of workshops and tours on the themes of essential oils and aromatherapy in the Renaissance wing.
