Préalpes d’Azur: the Alps on the sunny side
From the union between the French Riviera and the Alps were born the Préalpes of the French Riviera. The landscapes here are grandiose and wild: valleys with cultivated fields, woods and forests, meadows, vertiginous valleys… With more than 2000 plant species, the Park is home to a third of the French flora, including 65 protected species and 40 species found only in the region. Many animal species also live in the Préalpes: European nightjar, ortolan bunting, rock ptarmigan, pipit rousseline, European owl, Jean-le-Blanc circaet, white foot crayfish, Orsini viper, Strinatii’s hydromant, many species of bats… You will be able to initiate yourself to many nature leisure activities. Hiking is a popular nature activity in the Préalpes. You can also discover the paths of the Park by mountain bike, practice climbing or canyoning, take off on a via ferrata, or even get to know the skies during a paragliding experience… Men have been present on these lands for thousands of years and have handed down to us a rich historical heritage: historical milestones, bread ovens, wash houses, wells, castles, oppidums… The heritage of the Préalpes d’Azur will also surprise your palate. The regional markets and traditional grocery stores will introduce you to local flavors: honey and gingerbread, goat’s cheese, lamb meat, market garden produce, raspberries, olives, olive oil…
