Calade is a technique often used in the Mediterranean. It involves covering busy areas (streets, squares, etc.) with pebbles to make them more resistant. In and around Menton, craftsmen have often combined the useful with the decorative, creating two-tone patterns. The most impressive example is the square in front of the Basilique Saint-Michel, which is listed as a historic monument, and the most recent is the esplanade at Les Sablettes.
