Take advantage of the clear morning light to go for an easy walk on the vast Girose Glacier ice cap, where the view draws the eyes from the nearby la Meije to the far away Mont Blanc. You will approach crevasses and admire pinnacles of ice.
Although they have lost some of their size in recent years, the Girose glacier and the Mont de Lans glacier together form France's largest ice cap (6 km from east to west). Compared with its neighbors, the Tabuchet, Meije, Enfetchores and Râteau glaciers, which are only accessible to extreme mountaineers and skiers, the Girose glacier is less shy. Its blue-white-gray, gently sloping, rounded forms lie at the foot of the Ruillans station, the arrival point for the La Grave cable car. Its crevasses and seracs are within reach of almost everyone - provided they are accompanied by a mountain guide and roped up, of course. You'll never tire of the view: from the Vercors to Mont Blanc, from the Vanoise to Mont Thabor, from the pretty peaks of the Ecrins and Oisans to the majestic Meije.
- Glacier tour - 1h30:
Take the cable car up to the foot of the Meije in the heart of the Ecrins for your first taste of mountaineering, accompanied by a mountain guide. Take advantage of the crystal-clear morning light for this easy hike, which requires no technical knowledge. You'll get up close to the crevasses and admire the seracs. It's accessible to all, including children aged 6 and over. Every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday by prior arrangement.
- Glacier hiking :
You set off for a short day's hike on crampons from the top of the cable car onto the glacier, usually as far as the Dôme de la Lauze. The guide adapts the itinerary and route to your level. Gondola departures are usually at 8:30 a.m., so plan ahead with your guide depending on current conditions. An ideal outing for good walkers who want to venture a little further into the world of mountaineering.
Bring: good waterproof boots, protection from the cold, wind and sun (sunglasses and sun cream).
