Climb a 3000m peak! Mont Thabor, which rises to 3178m, is a summit accessible by day for a great but memorable day's walk.
We set off early to take advantage of the cool morning air.
Our day begins at the Laval parking lot (2024m), at the end of the Clarée valley road. The trail climbs steadily, passing the pretty Lac Long and Lac Rond, then Lac des Muandes and Col des Muandes (2828m). We then cross over the ridges into a world of mineral beauty, passing the Col de Valmeinier, the Col de la Chapelle, and the little chapel of Mont Thabor, just below the summit. Arrive at the summit for a well-deserved break with panoramic views of the Ecrins (Meije, Pelvoux, Agneaux, Barre des Ecrins...), Vanoise, Italy and Mont Viso, Briançonnais and Queyras, and even Mont-Blanc in the distance when the view is clear. Descend by a partly different route to see other lakes in this beautiful valley.
All in all, a fine day at altitude, with 1250m of ascent, 20 kms and 8h of walking.
