An ancient roadmen’s house dating back to the beginning of the twentieth century, the charm and authenticity of the refuge have been preserved. The refuge is currently owned by the Mercantour National park.
- At the beginning of the 20th century, the cantonniers working on the Col de la Cayolle built this house using local stone and wood. Now owned by the Mercantour National Park, the building has been converted into a mountain refuge.
Located in the upper Var valley, it offers 36 accommodation places in rooms or dormitories, plus a room for people with reduced mobility. The refuge keeper, a former mountain guide and mountain expert, welcomes hikers, skiers and snowshoers in summer and winter alike.
The refuge is accessible all year round, and the road is cleared of snow in winter. Comfortable and welcoming, it's a welcome stopover after a day of outdoor activities. The janitor prepares comforting meals using local produce. In addition to its welcoming role, the refuge is also dedicated to raising awareness of the need to preserve biodiversity, and has been awarded the "ESPRIT PARC" and "MERCANTOUR ECOTOURISME" labels.
