In 1971, the company was limited to a single coffee shop in Seattle’s historic Pike Place Market. From that small coffee shop, Starbucks offered some of the world’s finest freshly roasted whole bean coffees. The name “Starbucks,” taken from the novel Moby Dick, evokes the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee traders.
