Until 1930, Salin de Giraud, which existed for a few decades was exclusively related to Arles by the road and departmental railway.Rhone was an obstacle to access to the East of the mouths of the Rhône.Only a few smugglers with their boats were crossing people. In 1932 the Bouches du Rhone Department studied and took the decision to implement a way of crossing of the wide river of 400 meters at this location.It is the construction of a ferry to strings of 15 metres in length which was adopted. Salin de Giraud, October 8, 1933, in the presence of notables and the local population, the first container was inaugurated as well as a large building ocher, still existing, where smugglers were staying with their families.
