Until the 1960s, Fos was a little village living on fishing, farming and the salt industry. Then the new port and industrial complex of Fos was created, brining major changes.
LHauture is the name of the rock of Fos; at a height of 39 m, it overlooks the local area and the new town. The Castrum de Fossis, mentioned as early as 923, is one of the largest and oldest castles in Lower Provence. A town wall closely adapted to the rock encloses some buildings, including the 12th century Saint-Sauveur Church. Fos is also a seaside resort with more than 5 km of fine sandy beaches and a pleasure port.
